If it was up to you, what would you call
the new baseball team that's coming to town? Twenty two thousand children, from
grade schools all across southeast Ohio, got a chance to answer that question and
help the Southern Ohio team find its identity.
For two weeks in late March and early April,
suggestion forms were delivered all across the region looking for suggestions for
the new team's name. The suggestions were wide and varied. The Starz? The Bootleggers?
The Ocelots? The Hotties???
After all the suggestions were collected
and then reviewed, a winning name was found on seven entries: the Southern Ohio
Copperheads. The team held a drawing and selected two winners. The two winning students
are Daniel Gillespie, of Athens Elementary and Lucas Rhyan of Albany Elementary.
For winning the name the team contest, both
Daniel and Rhyan will receive four season tickets for themselves and their families.
The families of the boys received team t shirts. In addition to the season tickets,
the boys also will get an authentic game jersey and will get to be a bat boy for
one Copperheads home game.
